The Meredith Suzuki Program

The Meredith Suzuki ProgramThe Suzuki approach is based upon the Suzuki Triangle, which emphasizes the equal importance of student, parent, and teacher, all working together. This does require time and commitment from the Suzuki parent. We want you to be fully aware of that commitment. After talking with a member of our Suzuki faculty, you may be put on a waiting list and then begin lessons as soon as we can fit you into a teacher's schedule. To further educate yourself, go to the Web or the public library and find any and all information about the Suzuki Method. Suzuki's Nurtured by Love is required reading.

The most important part of your daily practice will be listening to the music you will be learning. Many Suzuki parents begin the listening before or at the time of their child's birth. We encourage you to get the Vol. 1 tape or CD and begin your listening now in preparation for becoming a Suzuki family. In Raleigh these may be purchased at Montgomery Violin Shop, Burrage Music, Burt's Music, and possibly other music stores, as well. (Call ahead to make certain they are in stock.) Do not purchase a guitar or violin until your teacher has instructed you to do so.

Students in the Meredith Suzuki ProgramSuzuki Violin

Private and small group lessons are offered in Suzuki violin to students from age three and up. In addition to 15-, 30-, 45-, or 60-minute private and small group lessons, students are required to participate in a minimum of five group lessons per semester, as well as solo and group performances at Meredith and other locations.  Fiddling and chamber music are offered to more advanced students.

Parent participation is essential to the program. Using the Suzuki Observation form, arrange and complete four observations of Suzuki method lessons. Once you have completed your four observations and returned the form to program coordinator Wilinda Atchley, she will help place you with a Suzuki violin or viola teacher

The Meredith Suzuki ProgramSuzuki Guitar

Suzuki guitar lessons for children ages four and older are available in private and ensemble classes. Parents of Suzuki guitar students are trained to help their children at home before the child begins lessons. Recitals are held regularly at Meredith and in the community.
